I've seen this show several times, and each time I do, I never remember how much I actually like it. Not being a bigtime musical girl, and going into the night with a headache and a lot on the mind I thought it was a bit of death sentence. And I was so wrong. what a great show. What adorable kids. What a neat concept for the show that I'd not seen before (Thanks to a curtain speech hint that was well appreciated). It was the first show in a while where I could see people having a good time on stage. Real joy! Sure there were some trip ups and a few weak links, but this was delightful. More and more I'm seeing children of all ages at shows and I love this trend. This would be a perfect opportunity to take your family out! Only two shows left but there are seats available so go get them!

This performance was nice (very traditional),
but didn't bring much of anything new to the
table. If you want to see a production
highlighting all those people who did this
show in high school, but are now 20 years
older this could be just your ticket. There
some fine moments, but also some rather
uncomfortable music mis-steps. Still, it's
worth the price of admission to see the
show...again.

Like Oz, River City is a city that exists only in our collective imagination. Nonetheless, it’s not an overstatement to say that its existence is embedded so deeply in the subconscious of the baby boomer generation that it has attained the status of myth. As such, it serves an essential purpose by defining and validating just who and what we are as a culture. To put it simply, this wonderful musical with its lovely, unforgettable tunes is as American as the proverbial apple pie.
Preston, Jones and Howard, cast in the classic movie adaptation, set the standard for their respective characters, and they have yet to be surpassed. Nevertheless, this version comes astonishingly close to reaching that high bar. The exceedingly talented White, Winslow and DeHart are simply marvelous to behold, performing true to the heart and spirit of their characters without resorting to some ersatz imitation of the original template. And their success can be attributed in no small measure to the uniformly strong and delightful supporting performances and visionary direction of C. Michael Traw. Outstanding!
It’s a first class production in virtually every aspect: from the elaborate choreography and costuming, to the creative set, audio and lighting design, it’s definitely a winner. Notwithstanding some audio mixing problems, and the irony of a slightly out of tune, yet more than adequate, live orchestra, the presentation was virtually flawless. It’s not hyperbole to suggest that with a little more burnish we’re talkin’ the Curran in San Francisco, even Broadway, folks!
At the risk of sounding like a latter day Professor Harold Hill, please do yourself a favor ladies and gentleman and run, not walk, to the theatre and treat yourself to this exceptionally entertaining slice of Americana before it ends its short run. Egads!

This show has all the elements that
you'd want to see in a professional
production--only this is performed by
dedicated amateurs whose obvious love
for the theatre shines through every
single scene...These folks have a very
tight show and it's tough to find any
flaws that take anything away from an
outstanding show curtain to curtain.
Bravo SBMT!!

Saw this show last night and was truly impressed
with the quality of the production. The cast was
quite talented and all the production effects like the
scenery and costumes were just wonderful. I was
particularly impressed by some of the young
performers, like Kameron DeHart as Winthrop and
Lindsey Meyer as Zaneeta. Talk about cute as a
button! The adults were fine singers and actors,
too. Scott White is both charming and oily as Harold
Hill, while Robyn Winslow shines as the lovelorn
librarian. If you've seen school and other amateur
versions of "The Music Man," you should go to this
one and see how it should be done. So much
energy on stage! They really have put together a
lovely show from start to finish.

SBMT does a fantastic job of this
classic family musical! Beautiful
costumes, vividly painted sets and
lively dancing entertains and captures
the imagination of the audience as it
transports them to early 19th century
River City, Iowa. You'll walk away
smiling from ear to ear!

My husband and I saw this show on Sunday. He was
feeling a little under the weather and I was not
having the best day either, until we sat down in the
theater and saw this show. What a perfect cure for
the blahs! Right away, we were in another place and
time, transported by the lovely voices and beautiful
costumes and scenery. We were smiling and
clapping and laughing through the whole thing (and
even a few joyful tears at the end, too). Thank you,
thank you, South Bay Theater for making us feel so
good again! Make the time to see The Music Man
and you will be glad you did.

Meredith Willson’s classic The Music Man is given a sparkling, briskly-paced production by South Bay Musical Theater, staged at the Saratoga Civic Theater and directed by C. Michael Traw, who also designed the outstanding costumes that provide both authenticity and colorful whimsy to the production.
A strong cast, led by the engaging Scott White as Professor Harold Hill, brings Willson’s classic tunes to life, including “76 Trombones,” “’til There Was You,” and “Trouble.”
Opening with, “Iowa Stubborn,” the ensemble cast, directed by Diane Milo, delivers crisp, energetic, well-blended vocals, with movement engagingly choreographed by Jacob Brent, whose work—especially in “Trouble,” and “Marian the Librarian” is especially engaging.
Under the direction of Brian Haslanger, a full orchestra provided a bright and emotionally true accompaniment to the evening.
Standout cast members include White, who brings convincing salesmanship, excellent comic timing, and a powerful voice to the role
