Gardeners of Identity... Basques in San Mateo County - Exhibition

Of the 58,000 Basques living in the United States today, the largest population resides in California. This exhibit explores the Basque culture, how it came to San Mateo County and its many unique traditions that have become an important part of the local community.

Horsing Around in San Mateo County - Exhibition

Horses have had an enormous impact on the development of San Mateo County from the early 1800s, when vaqueros worked with horses on ranchos to modern day horse racing at Bay Meadows. The exhibit features twenty miniature saddles by local artist Reg Buyle and will be shown at the lower rotunda and hallways.

The San Mateo County History Museum presents this unique exhibit, while explores those toys from the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s that allowed children to mimic the activities of adults. Objects highlighted will include an antique pedal car fire truck and airplane, Tonka work trucks, a fully electric 1929 Lionel Stove & Oven, a G-men Fingerprint Set, a “Miss Friday” mechanical doll and a working Lionel train, just to name a few.
