	King John, the Comedy By William Shakespeare Presented by Calaveras Repertory Theatre at Ayer Education Center March 11-March 28, 2010 Calaveras Repertory Theatre presents the World Premiere of King John, the Comedy By William Shakespeare adapted and directed by John Ribovich. King John, The Comedy turns Shakespeare's original history into a rollicking comedy with nods to Monty Python and the commedia dell arte. Five actors (Noel Wood, Kim Saunders, Helena Clarkson, Glenn Artero and Erik Rhea) perform all the roles in a fast-paced flurry of costume and character changes.   There are shining moments both in material and comic exchanges during this show, but the opening in my opinion came a few days before everything had gelled. Despite some of the disjointed sections, and competing with an audience that was young, inexperienced, and quite frankly RUDE, I laughed out loud a lot. Had it been me I would have left out the singing which was not the play's, nor the space's nor the cast's strength, and just stuck with the slapstick. Extra Kudos to Bill Olson who was 100% committed throughout, never calling it in for a moment. This should be much improved and enjoyable next week. The intimate space and the hard working actors deserve an audience. Collapse

  In the director's notes, John Ribovich suggests that this production is aimed at both audiences that love and hate Shakespeare. I belong to the latter, though several of my friends insist that it's because I've only seen poorly performed Shakespeare. I walked into this production expecting the worst and was pleasantly surprised; it features memorably outstanding performances that compelled me to submit this review. As I watched Noel Wood (Bastard/King Phillip/Hubert the executioner) prance about the stage as three vivid characters, I kept checking my program for an asterisk next to his credit (commonly an indication of being a member of Actors' Equity Association). Mr. Wood, if you're reading this, why aren't you Equity? You certainly have the chops! This is one actor whose career I want to follow. The rest of the cast is admirable. Glenn Artero has some funny moments as the "sneak-weasel" King John, including (without giving anything away) a brief encounter with Robin Hood. Collapse
