    The American GI Forum was founded in 1948 to advocate for civil rights of Mexican American military veterans and their families.     The American GI Forum was founded in 1948 to advocate for civil rights of Mexican American military veterans and their families. It is a community-based membership enterprise dedicated to promoting education, advancing cultural understanding and quality of life for Mexican Americans.

    The local branch, American GI Forum of San Jose, produces the annual Fiestas Patrias celebrations, Cinco de Mayo and 16 de Septiembre in downtown San Jose. It developed and operates alcohol and drug prevention and recovery programs, has a scholarship program, and assists more than 150 community organizations with their efforts. It promotes historical heritage and supports many social events and other community organizations that prosper today.
