Among the most influential artists of the 20th century, Andy Warhol is perhaps best known as a painter and a filmmaker. The role photography played in his art making is often overlooked or undervalued. David Bacon and Francisco Dominguez have both followed in the tradition of Depression-era photographers such as Dorothea Lange, focusing their cameras on struggle, dissent, immigrants, and workers. Hobos to Street People compares artistic interpretations of homelessness from the Dust Bowl migrants of the 1930's to the stigmatized street people of today—with a focus on California. Art and science blend seamlessly in Jo Whaley's recent photographic series, The Theater of Insects. Inspired by old dioramas found in natural history museums, Whaley creates theatrically staged images of exquisitely colored insects against imaginary — almost dreamlike — backgrounds.

Her specimens are entomologically accurate, yet they are juxtaposed with backgrounds composed of weathered, man-made materials like rusted metal, broken glass, painted wood, and crumpled paper.
