Expanding Views of Africa - Exhibition

The arts of Africa date from the beginning of humanity to the present and express universal and timeless ideas. The newly reinstalled African art galleries feature more than 200 objects and are designed to expand conventional ways of considering African art and culture. The galleries offer historical depth, geographic and chronological representation ranging from the contemporary times to ancient Egypt, and a diverse range of media.

Rodin Sculpture Garden - Public Tours

The Cantor Art Center’s collection of Rodin bronzes is the largest in the world outside Paris, second only to the Musee Rodin. More than fifty works by Rodin are on view inside the Center, mostly cast bronze, but also works in wax, plaster, and terra cotta. The museum’s second-floor gallery devoted to European art is revitalized and now includes artworks from the ancient Mediterranean, in addition to 16th- through 18th-century art from western Europe. The legendary dancer Isadora Duncan is the focus of the fall 2011 course taught by Muriel Maffre for Stanford's Dance Division. Rare film footage documenting Duncan is projected in the gallery, along with video and gesture drawings by students learning Duncan's technique.

Dance classes in the Center's auditorium are open to visitors to observe and sketch. (Materials are provided). A final performance by students will be held in Roble Gym in December.
