Stanford's Department of Art and Art History offers courses of study in the history of art, the practice of art, and film and media studies. These courses offer special opportunities for students to increase their understanding of the meaning and purpose of the arts, their historical development, their role in society, and their relationship to other humanistic disciplines such as literature, music and philosophy. Work in the classroom and studio is intended to intensify visual perception of the formal and expressive means of art, and to encourage insight into a variety of technical processes.
