	Die Fledermaus - Comic Opera by Johann Strauss Jr. Presented by Mission City Opera at Mission City Center for Performing Arts February 18, 2012 Die Fledermaus, the beloved comic opera (sung in English), is filled with familiar songs by Johann Strauss, Jr. Hilarious comedy situations ensue at a party when a man romances a woman who turns out to be his wife in disguise. This concert version for full orchestra is conducted by well-known Bay Area conductor, Michael Taylor; Artistic Director is Sharon Kaye. 	Truce of Carols plus Amahl and the Night Visitors - Opera Presented by Mission City Opera at Mission City Center for Performing Arts December 18-December 19, 2010 Truce of Carols is an opera based on the poignant, true story of Christmas Eve 1914, in the Belgian trenches of WWI. German troops began decorating the area around their trenches in the region of Ypres, Belgium, for Christmas. They placed candles on trees then continued the celebration by singing Christmas carols, most notably Stille Nacht (Silent Night). The British troops in the trenches across from them responded by singing English carols.   I have seen La Boheme many times and I feel that Mission City Opera did a great job. Everybody I saw in the lobby seemed to agree that the acting and singing were on a very high level all around.... Expand

  I have seen La Boheme many times and I feel that Mission City Opera did a great job. Everybody I saw in the lobby seemed to agree that the acting and singing were on a very high level all around. The chorus was a little weak, but one comes to hear the leads and they did not disappoint. The previous reviewers comments about the Mimi looking 30 years too old is ridiculous. All the leads looked and sounded terrific and I was very impressed with this local production. The orchestra was excellent and the super titles helped a lot. Very nice venue. Look forward to seeing another opera there. Collapse

  La Boheme is an enjoyable, swift opera that manages to be funny in addition to being a tragedy. The cast, as far as vocals go, was impressive. For the most part the leads could sing very well and clearly were quality vocalists. The acting, however, is where the production went downhill. Rodolfo had the charm of an artsy writer, but failed to show appropriate emotion when his Mimi was dying. Sadly the Actress playing Mimi, though a lovely voice, wasn't believable as she appears about 30 years too old for the part and the costuming and/or makeup wasn't used to help conceal this. The older ensemble was painfully over acting. The Vivace Youth Chorus was adorable. Diane Squires, Robert Snedegar & David Wright were solid performers, though I could have done with a bit more sex appeal from Musetta. Schaunard stood out as the one performer who could both act and sing, he was right on in every moment. Collapse
