  " A most wonderful friend of the Czar was I " ... What a clever old story with some very unusual and distinctive comic characters. Small town life in old Russia is not a very common framework for a funny adventure but this one still works for a modern audience. A nice pace of frequent motion and commotion does not feel like we are watching a bizarre scene from a small town in Czarist Russia. Its design is more like a Shakespearean farce among characters with buffoons, drunks, subplots, posturing, chicanery and surprises. Simple set with very bright lighting and beautiful period costumes. Clever directing. Play is very polished verbal comedy rather than slapstick or television style insults . ... " A wonderful friend of the Czar Nikolai " ... Collapse

  Good acting, directing and staging in Bus Barn help this play step up a lot in stature. Passionate players and creative directing make this a much more entertaining theatrical experience when compared to any of the internet postings of these scenes. Characters are quickly and effectively well-developed and distinctive in each short vignette, Some challenging acting parts in pairs hold your attention. They do a lot with only a little with which to work. Script would work better if scenes had more continuity and connections other than geographic to hold these fictional stories together. Lighting a bit harsh and repetitive among changing scenes in high latitude setting.This worthwhile production helps the script work better than the original text offers. It would benefit from an additional frosty snippet in each short set. Author ( Cariani ) seems compelled to inject lots of awkward kissing scenes which would not cause Frosty to melt or merit a PG13.
