Fly fishing's most celebrated annual event--the Fly Fishing Film Tour, the original and largest event of its kind--begins its continent-wide trek this winter The traveling spectacle serves as a stage for the best filmmakers in the industry, an avenue for supporting critical conservation groups, an expo for local retailers and outfitters, and one heck of a party for aspiring outdoor enthusiasts and avid anglers alike

With never-seen footage from across the globe, a party atmosphere, audience giveaways and valuable coupons, the annual high-energy spectacle is the sport's most anticipated live-event This year's tour will make stops in over 125 cities across the US and Canada Along the way local businesses, conservation groups, filmmakers and fans all stand to benefit from each screening

This year's spectacle promises a greater sense of adventure and diversity of content than any prior tour or other touring show "We've got incredible footage from our favorite backyard locales like Montana, Florida, Idaho, and the Gulf, and we've got some amazing segments from destinations like the Bahamas, Belize, Alaska, New Zealand, and Canada," says Fly Fishing Film Tour's Filmmaker and Road Manager Thad Robison "But on top of that is the unique stories that are told along the way We've got a punk rock band fishing in Wisconsin, a surgeon with Parkinson's getting after it at Hemingway's favorite old spots, a touching father-son story from Scotland, even this amazingly shot piece about nothing but insects We believe adventure is what you make it, and regardless of where you are, it's all about doing what you love"

Portrait of a Zombie

Family is family, flesh-eating or not

When a narcissistic filmmaker discovers the Murphys, an Irish family with an undead son, he jumps at the opportunity to document their story With an amateur crew, he travels to Dublin where the word "zombie" is all too common While filming, the community scorns the decision to allow their son to live, yet the Murphy's strong morals won't permit giving up on their once golden child With the zombie epidemic growing and as riots against the family climax, the echo of lulling moans and the odor of rotting flesh are alive in the city of Dublin How long can you stick to your morals when everyone questions them?

Bay Area Country Dance Society's Playford Ball, started in 1980 by Brad Foster, is one of their earliest and most popular activities While some communities have Playford Balls that limit themselves exclusively to dances that were published in John Playford and his descendents between 1650 and the late 1700s, this event covers dances written from 1650 to today

The Playford Ball--as well as the rehearsal dance the evening beforehand (held in Hayward) and additional practice dances in the east bay, Peninsula, and Sierra Foothills--are organized by a large committee that devotes a great deal of effort to making the Ball a splendid event As a result, Ball attendees are treated to marvelous decorations, excellent food, and exquisite music Very little dance instruction is required at the Ball, in large part because the Ball program and dance directions are distributed to west coast callers the November prior to the Ball

Formal or festive attire is encouraged among ball attendees, with many attendees choosing to wear period costume--although hoops and panniers are discouraged due to space considerations--or outfits relating to the year's theme Attendance has been between 100-150 for the past several years; sizable contingents from southern California and the Pacific northwest, as well as attendees from New York, Boston, and Alaska, have been in regular attendance

To inaugurate the centennial year of the building of its historic villa, the Montalvo Arts Center presents an unconventional timeline exhibition entitled O' Great Reverie: Montalvo 1912-2012 The exhibition, which is organized by Associate Curator Donna Conwell and Montalvo Design Fellows Women--the creative partnership of Los Angeles-based designers Scott Barry and Neil Doshi--will open on Friday, January 27 and run through Sunday, May 13

For O' Great Reverie, Conwell, Barry, and Doshi have taken what they collectively describe as an "idiosyncratic approach": they have opted against a standard linear chronology, and forgone efforts to generate an exhaustive account of Montalvo's history Instead, they have focused on incorporating the diverse voices of those who have experienced and worked at Montalvo over the years, and hope to demonstrate that creating the history of a place is always based on personal selections and interpretations, filtered through the prism of the present moment

To this end, they have organized the exhibition materials--including historical documents, letters, ephemera, photographs, audio and visual footage, and rare books all drawn from the holdings of the Montalvo Archive and Library and the Bancroft Library at the University of California, Berkeley--around four core themes, emphasizing Montalvo's multiple overlapping histories, focusing on personal narratives, and demonstrating the associative relationships among the past, present, and future: Landscape, exploring the way in which Montalvo's buildings and grounds have transformed over time; Publics, examining how different groups of people who have visited Montalvo over the years have interacted with it in their own unique ways; Communities, discussing the various circles of volunteers, artists-in-residence, and staff members who have actively shaped Montalvo's evolution; and Preservation, asking important philosophical questions about the limits and legitimacy of historical restoration

Barry and Doshi have conceived of and constructed every aspect of the exhibtion, including a modular display furniture system, audio-video viewing kiosks and reading stations, and didactic texts in the form of take-away broadsides The designers have also crafted a series of subtle sculptural interventions in the gallery space and several creative works that respond to Montalvo and its histories Included among these will be a a large scale photograph of one of the classical sculptures on the Montalvo grounds and a 100-page guestbook, in which visitors are invited to participate in the telling of Montalvo's histories by recording their recollections and experiences

Women are the inaugural recipients of the Design Fellowship awarded by the prestigious Sally and Don Lucas Artists Residency Program at the Montalvo Arts Center With this fellowship, Montalvo further strengthens its commitment to supporting creativity across a broad range of disciplines by fostering and advancing innovative design practice
