The photograph of the raising of the American flag on Mt Suribachi, Iwo Jima, in the final months of World War II is arguably the most famous photo ever made It is the most published of photos, and it is an enduring icon of the American experience The picture has inspired four motion pictures, numerous books and articles, the monument at Arlington National Cemetery, and more Made by San Francisco photographer Joe Rosenthal of the Associated Press, the picture is that rare image that directly changed the way Americans thought and acted It inspired the Seventh (and final) War Bond drive of World War II

The picture, however, was controversial and has remained so over the decades--victim of misunderstandings and the target of those who would diminish its impact Join Hal Buell, veteran Associated Press photo editor and author, as he discusses the story of the photograph and traces the lifelong journey of Rosenthal and his remarkable picture with its trials and its tribulations In this presentation of more than 100 photographs and video clips, Buell tells the full, true story of the photo, the battle of Iwo Jima, the photo's impact on World War II, and the photo's life as a lasting, patriotic symbol

Hal Buell has worked on assignment in more than thirty-five countries and has headed the Associated Press Photo Service for twenty-five years, supervising an international staff of 300 photographers His career in news photography spanned the days of flash bulbs to the use of digital cameras, and many of the pictures of the last half of the 20th century crossed his desk Buell is the author of more than a dozen books on news photography, including Moments: The Pulitzer Prize Winning Photographs; The Kennedy Brothers; and Uncommon Valor, Common Virtue--the story of the Iwo Jima flag raising

Sebastian Seung, a dynamic young professor at MIT, is at the forefront of a revolution in neuroscience He believes that our identity lies not in our genes, but in the connections between our brain cells--our own particular wiring

Seung and a dedicated group of researchers are leading the effort to map these connections, neuron by neuron, synapse by synapse It is a monumental effort--the scientific equivalent of climbing Mount Everest--but if they succeed, they will uncover the basis of personality, identity, intelligence, memory, and perhaps disorders such as autism and schizophrenia Seung explains how this new map of a human "connectome" might even enable us to "upload" our brains into a computer, making us effectively immortal

Sebastian Seung is Professor of Computational Neuroscience at MIT and an Investigator of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute He has made important advances in robotics, neuroscience, neuroeconomics, and statistical physics His research has been published in leading scientific journals, and also featured in The New York Times, Technology Review, and The Economist

Stanford Law Professor Jenny Martinez discusses The Slave Trade and the Origins of International Human Rights Law There is a broad consensus among scholars that the idea of human rights was a product of the Enlightenment, but that a self-conscious and broad-based human rights movement focused on international law only began after World War II In this narrative, the nineteenth century's absence is conspicuous--few have considered that era seriously, much less written books on it However, Martinez shows in this novel interpretation of the roots of human rights law, the foundation of the movement that is known today was a product of one of the nineteenth century's central moral causes: the movement to ban the international slave trade

For years, long lost information about the man that was literally instrumental in Charles Lindbergh's famous transatlantic flight sat forgotten in Bob Dye's home

Dye ran across the old newspaper and magazine clippings, telegrams, and letters about Brice Goldsborough one day when rifling through some old boxes As he read them he began to realize how much Goldsborough contributed to early aviation

Brice Goldsborough made a big impression in a short time In 1919 he started Pioneer Instrument Company, a firm that became one of the world's largest aviation instrument producers It was Goldsborough who designed, built, and installed the instrument panel for Lindbergh's famous plane, the Spirit of St Louis He also became associated with other famous names in aviation such as Glenn Curtiss, Clyde Cessna, Walter Beech, and Igor Sikorsky

To learn more about this forgotten aviator come listen to Author Bob Dye talk about Brice Goldsborough in his book, A Pioneer in Aviation: The Life Story of Brice Goldsborough There will be a book signing after the presentation

Dr Richard Oppenlander has studied, researched, and lectured extensively on global depletion and food choice responsibility for over 40 years With relentless dedication to the healing of our bodies, the welfare of animals, and the healing of our planet, Oppenlander wrote Comfortably Unaware, a book with a three-pronged approach to promoting the eradication of eating animals and encouraging a plant-based way of life He addresses the disconnect between sustainability and food choices with unapologetic candor, discussing facts and perspectives that many authors touting commitment to sustainable practices are unwilling to ever cover or disclose

Alexandra Day is a legendary storyteller who has a knack for surprising juxtapositions She is the creator of the rottweiler named Carl who gently tends to an infant in a series of books that began in 1985 Now comes The Fairy Dogfather

Hector has trouble differentiating the letters D and G Thus when he writes a request for a fairy godfather, the Fairy Dogfather arrives instead, wearing a fedora and smoking a cigar He isn't what Hector had in mind at all He uses big words, and instead of simply granting Hector's wishes, like a regular fairy godmother, he is a rather demanding visitor Hector needs a present for his Mom's birthday right away Can the Fairy Dogfather help grant his wishes?

Willow Wilson, author of The Butterfly Mosque, talks about her book and answers questions about being a Muslim and American

The Butterfly Mosque is a satisfying, lyrical memoir of a potentially disastrous clash between East and West Wilson embarked on a yearlong stint working at an English-language school in Cairo right after her college graduation Once in Cairo, despite being exposed to the smoldering hostility Arab men held for Americans, especially for women, she found she was moved deeply by the daily plight of the people Through her deepening relationship with Omar--an educated, English-speaking physics teacher at the school--she also learned Arabic and embraced the ways Islam was woven into the daily fabric of existence Arguably, Wilson's decision to take up the headscarf and champion the segregated, protected status of Arab women can be viewed as odd; however, her work proves a tremendously heartfelt, healing cross-cultural fusion

"Object Oriented Programming" by visual artist and Stanford native, Katie Herzog, explores the relationship between creativity and innovation in an extensive art exhibition at PARC

Katie Herzog combines art and disjunctive librarianship through a cross-disciplinary practice engaging knowledge, narrative, and information culture Herzog's warm, playful paintings combine weaving, paint and mixed media to comment on the object, language and symbols of human communication

"Object Oriented Programming" is curated from Herzog's large body of work produced over the past ten years

Herzog's distinct practice also includes serving as an artist in residence at the Whittier Public Library since 2007 and Director of the Molesworth Institute since April, 2011 (a mysterious vocational organization dedicated to library humor and epistemic absurdity)

Herzog received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Rhode Island School of Design and a Master of Fine Arts from the University of California, San Diego She studied Library and Information Science at San Jose State University and has participated in numerous artist residencies including Skowhegan, the Banff Centre, and Program Initiative for Art and Architecture Collaboration

Poet-teacher Magdalena Montagne has helped hundreds of people find their inner muse, leading poetry writing groups for over a decade, currently with the Santa Cruz Public Library and the Capitola Book Café; as well as with nonprofits such as the Homeless Services Center and Watsonville Community Hospital A graduate of the University of California, Santa Cruz, she has studied with distinguished poets such as Robert Bly, Sharon Olds, and Robert Hass
