NT Live provides a unique opportunity for viewers to see live productions from the stages of London's National Theatre to cinema screens around the world
n a remote village in Eastern Europe, around 1900, the young Motl Mendl is entranced by the flickering silent images on his father’s cinematograph Bankrolled by Jacob, the ebullient local timber merchant, and inspired by Anna, the girl sent to help him make moving pictures of their village, he stumbles on a revolutionary way of story-telling Forty years on, Motl – now a famed American film director – looks back on his early life and confronts the cost of fulfilling his dreams
Following Vincent in Brixton and The Reporter, Nicholas Wright’s new play is a funny and fascinating tribute to the Eastern European immigrants who became major players in Hollywood’s golden age The award-winning Antony Sher – whose previous work with the National Theatre includes Primo and Stanley – returns to play Jacob

For centuries, humanity has wondered whether they are alone in the Universe Now, they are finally one step closer to knowing the answer With the discovery in 1995 of the first planet orbiting another star, it is now known that planets are not unique to Earth's Solar System In fact, these extra-solar planets now appear to be quite common

This planetarium show explores what makes a planet Earth-like and takes an immersive full-dome tour of several worlds that just might fit the conditions humanity needs for survival

This is a Clark Planetarium Production in high-definition, 360-degree full-dome video Its content is geared for audience members Grades 5 to adult

Gounod's Faust was the most successful opera of its time, reaching Covent Garden in 1863, four years after its Parisian premiere, and quickly becoming a favorite of Victorian audiences In 2004 Faust returned to The Royal Opera's repertory with a flourish: David McVicar's brilliantly theatrical production, played out in the Paris of the Second Empire, has given its familiar melodies, grand ensembles and epic central struggle between good and evil a new lease of life

The downfall of Faust, the philosopher tempted by the demon Mephistopheles, and the terrible consequences of his tainted love of the innocent Marguerite and her brother Valentin are charted with insight and theatrical bravura With its devilish presentation of the Cabaret L'Enfer, where Gounod's famous Waltz brings the second act to an eye-catching climax, this production reclaims Faust for the 21st century

Knowledge is power! Come learn the facts and join in stimulating discussion at our annual Hidden Villa Moovie Nite series!

First in the series this year is King Corn with the follow-up Big River

In King Corn, Ian Cheney and Curt Ellis, best friends from college on the East Coast, move to the heartland to learn where their food comes from With the help of friendly neighbors, genetically modified seeds, and powerful herbicides, they plant and grow a bumper crop of America's most-productive, most-subsidized grain on one acre of Iowa soil But when they try to follow their pile of corn into the food system, what they find raises troubling questions about how we eat - and what we farm

There will be a discussion and speaker after the film to talk about local issues with the food system and what you can do to make changes

Ages 14+ please

Thanks for supporting Hidden Villa and we look forward to seeing you!

The Department of Art & Art History at Stanford University is pleased to present "Self-Help Book Club" on view on January 17-February 26, with a reception on January 20, 5:30-7:30 PM at the Thomas Welton Stanford Art Gallery This exhibition features new works created by five first year MFA students Ben Bigelow, Chris Duncan, Terry Powers, Greg Stimac, and Dawn Weleski present a body of work in diverse media--16mm film, video, painting, installation, and collaborative performance--and each artist takes a familiar medium and pushes the possibilities of content, presentation, and methodology

In The Lonesome Foghorn Blows, Ben Bigelow excavates an elusive Americana of the psyche through a rhythmic video tryptic

Chris Duncan plays with scale and vertigo in a large, 14 ft x 14 ft celestial painting called Painting 2011 that challenges the viewer's perception of space

Terry Powers' two large paintings on canvas depict his introspective forays into painterly narrative that attempt to resist interpretation

Greg Stimac has abandoned his usual road trip to explore an American icon through his virtual travels of the US

Dawn Weleski travels far afield to create an interactive and participatory work derived from remnants gathered during an artist residency that took her to Tahrir Square in Cairo

Visitor Information: Thomas Welton Stanford Art Gallery is open Tuesday through Friday, 10am-5pm, and Saturday and Sunday, 1-5pm Admission is free The Gallery is located in the Stanford campus, off Palm Drive at 419 Lasuen Mall Parking is free after 4pm and all day on weekends Information: (650) 723-2842, http://artstanfordedu

NT Live provides a unique opportunity for viewers to see live productions from the stages of London's National Theatre to cinema screens around the world
"Am I in earth, in heaven, or in hell? Sleeping or waking? Mad or well advised? Known unto these, and to myself disguised! Two sets of twins separated at birth collide in the same city without meeting for one crazy day, as multiple mistaken identities lead to confusion on a grand scale And for no one more so than Antipholus of Syracuse and his servant Dromio who, in search of their brothers, arrive in a land entirely foreign to their distant home A buzzing metropolis, to the outsiders it appears a place of wonderment and terror, where baffling gifts and unexplained hostilities abound Do you know me, sir? Am I Dromio? Am I your man? Am I myself?"
Consistently recognized by strangers, the visitors question their very selves as the turmoil escalates Meanwhile, Aegeon, father to the Antipholus twins, has been captured searching for his sons and, as an illegal immigrant, is sentenced to death at sunset Shakespeare’s furiously paced comedy will be staged in a contemporary world into which walk three prohibited foreigners who see everything for the first time Lenny Henry plays Antipholus of Syracuse

Portrait of a Zombie

Family is family, flesh-eating or not

When a narcissistic filmmaker discovers the Murphys, an Irish family with an undead son, he jumps at the opportunity to document their story With an amateur crew, he travels to Dublin where the word "zombie" is all too common While filming, the community scorns the decision to allow their son to live, yet the Murphy's strong morals won't permit giving up on their once golden child With the zombie epidemic growing and as riots against the family climax, the echo of lulling moans and the odor of rotting flesh are alive in the city of Dublin How long can you stick to your morals when everyone questions them?

A classic of opera, Verdi's famous score is loved for its melody and its drama David McVicar's immensely popular production, in period costume and with music conducted by John Eliot Gardiner, brings the 15th century court of Mantua alive: its womanizing Duke, the court jester Rigoletto bent on revenge, and his daughter Gilda, who the Duke loves but still destroys

Based on Le Roi s'amuse, Victor Hugo's controversial play, Verdi's sexually charged 1851 tragedy was undeniably shocking when it first appeared, but has emerged triumphant from transposition to different times and locations

The Rosicrucian Egyptian Museum presents the Mithraic Mysteries, a 35-minute planetarium show Of the many riddles left to us by antiquity, none is more intriguing than that of the ancient Roman religion known as the Mithraic mysteries The teachings of this ancient Roman "mystery religion" of Mithraism were guarded with the utmost secrecy, revealed only to select initiates While the Mithraists never wrote down their secret doctrines, they did leave a key to them in the arcane iconography, which filled the walls of their underground temples Until now, all attempts to decipher this iconography have proven fruitless Most experts have been content with a vague hypothesis that these images somehow derived from ancient Iranian religion
In a groundbreaking work, Dr David Ulansey has recently offered a radically different theory He argues that Mithraic iconography was actually an astronomical code, and that the cult began as a religious response to a startling scientific discovery The Rosicrucian Egyptian Museum presents his theory of the mysteries concealed in Mithraic temple carvings that could reveal the central secret of the cult: a secret consisting of an ancient vision of the ultimate nature of the universe
