Dr Richard Oppenlander has studied, researched, and lectured extensively on global depletion and food choice responsibility for over 40 years With relentless dedication to the healing of our bodies, the welfare of animals, and the healing of our planet, Oppenlander wrote Comfortably Unaware, a book with a three-pronged approach to promoting the eradication of eating animals and encouraging a plant-based way of life He addresses the disconnect between sustainability and food choices with unapologetic candor, discussing facts and perspectives that many authors touting commitment to sustainable practices are unwilling to ever cover or disclose

Knowledge is power! Come learn the facts and join in stimulating discussion at our annual Hidden Villa Moovie Nite series!

First in the series this year is King Corn with the follow-up Big River

In King Corn, Ian Cheney and Curt Ellis, best friends from college on the East Coast, move to the heartland to learn where their food comes from With the help of friendly neighbors, genetically modified seeds, and powerful herbicides, they plant and grow a bumper crop of America's most-productive, most-subsidized grain on one acre of Iowa soil But when they try to follow their pile of corn into the food system, what they find raises troubling questions about how we eat - and what we farm

There will be a discussion and speaker after the film to talk about local issues with the food system and what you can do to make changes

Ages 14+ please

Thanks for supporting Hidden Villa and we look forward to seeing you!

Fly fishing's most celebrated annual event--the Fly Fishing Film Tour, the original and largest event of its kind--begins its continent-wide trek this winter The traveling spectacle serves as a stage for the best filmmakers in the industry, an avenue for supporting critical conservation groups, an expo for local retailers and outfitters, and one heck of a party for aspiring outdoor enthusiasts and avid anglers alike

With never-seen footage from across the globe, a party atmosphere, audience giveaways and valuable coupons, the annual high-energy spectacle is the sport's most anticipated live-event This year's tour will make stops in over 125 cities across the US and Canada Along the way local businesses, conservation groups, filmmakers and fans all stand to benefit from each screening

This year's spectacle promises a greater sense of adventure and diversity of content than any prior tour or other touring show "We've got incredible footage from our favorite backyard locales like Montana, Florida, Idaho, and the Gulf, and we've got some amazing segments from destinations like the Bahamas, Belize, Alaska, New Zealand, and Canada," says Fly Fishing Film Tour's Filmmaker and Road Manager Thad Robison "But on top of that is the unique stories that are told along the way We've got a punk rock band fishing in Wisconsin, a surgeon with Parkinson's getting after it at Hemingway's favorite old spots, a touching father-son story from Scotland, even this amazingly shot piece about nothing but insects We believe adventure is what you make it, and regardless of where you are, it's all about doing what you love"

The Caldwell Gallery at the San Mateo County Hall of Justice in Redwood City presents a small group show featuring oil paintings by Tom Chapman, Kit Colman, Vicki Coe Mitchell and watercolors by Alisan Andrews Much of the artwork depicts San Mateo County scenes, from Woodside Horse Park to Montara Beach

Tom Chapman, a former horse jockey, is now a full-time artist who highlights his love and knowledge of horses in much of his art Kit Colman, a landscape oil painter, grew up in the Silicon Bay Area and her artwork in inspired by the beauty of California A longtime Woodside resident and physician, Vicki Coe Mitchell, spends much time painting outdoors where she enjoys capturing sea and landscapes Alisan Andrews, a former oil painter, explored watercolors in 1995 and hasn't stopped since She is fascinated with colors and how they work together

In addition, the Hall of Justice Community Gallery (downstairs by the cafe) is proud to showcase tranquil abstract acrylic paintings on concrete boards by Pescadero resident, Lora Groves Groves explains her newest work: "I explore the archive of qualities available with a sturdier surface It is a nice play off the porosity of the fabric because concrete has it's own variable porosity, but stands a different kind of working process"

Finally, The Rotunda Gallery at 555 County Center is pleased to exhibit sculpture and hanging mobiles by Dave Putnam, Woodside resident Putnman's work concentrates on raising awareness of endangered animal species By twisting thousands of strands of stainless steel wire together, he weaves furry animal shapes, as well as using brass and aluminum in his kinetic mobiles

The acclaimed Palo Alto Art Center will present Bay Area artist Judith Selby Lang's LawnBowls, the next new temporary site-specific installation in its series exploring art in public and community spaces Opening February 1, 2012, LawnBowls will be installed on the grounds of the Palo Alto Lawn Bowls Club, 474 Embarcadero in Palo Alto, through February 2013 Lang's work has been celebrated for its striking focus on the relationship between humans and the environment LawnBowls will be created by the public in several community workshops using recycled plastic bags to create monumental ball sculptures For information, visit wwwcityofpaloaltoorg/artcenter

"As a mixed media installation artist I am exploring the personal and global impact of detritus," says Lang "Through my art, I hope to bring awareness to crucial environmental issues and enliven public space Plastic is my primary material because it's free, it's ubiquitous, it's archival As we come to the end of the Era of Oil, plastic seems to be the material most expressive of our times And, like diamonds, it is forever"

LawnBowls will be an installation of 10-12 large balls created from single-use plastic bags arranged on the lawn space adjacent to the Palo Alto Lawn Bowls Club The balls will appear as a game in progress--as if some giant players had just left the scene These colorful sculptures will provide a compelling example of a playful reuse of what might otherwise be trash or perhaps recycled

The creation of LawnBowls will involve a community effort Workshops with the public (including youth, veterans, seniors and others) will be held at several locations in Palo Alto and East Palo Alto Participants will help cut hundreds of bags into strips to form the wrapping and will help to twine the bags around the form Working together, participants will gain pride in crafting something bigger than they could do on their own And they will help to make an important statement about plastic pollution

The awareness of the problem with single-use plastic bags is increasing The City of Palo Alto has been proactive, banning the bags in larger grocery stores in 2009 Efforts to educate the public about this important change continue In a fun and eye-catching way LawnBowls will contribute to this effort

LawnBowls is presented in conjunction with the Palo Alto Lawn Bowls Club, (wwwpalbcorg), is co-sponsored by the Palo Alto Public Art Commission and is supported by the Palo Alto Art Center Foundation Double Take and Clear-Story were funded, in part, by the Palo Alto Art Center Foundation through an IMLS grant

In addition to LawnBowls, Judith Selby Lang will also create a second related site-specific installation in the Palo Alto in the spring of 2012, dates and details to be announced
