These rides may include 2,000 to 4,000 riders from all over the South Bay on a given night, organized by around 100-200 volunteers These events are one-half political party, one-half street party made up of all types of bicyclists and human-powered transportation advocates who celebrate and build community in a monthly ride that must be experienced to be understood The starting point varies each month and participants ride 15-30 miles throughout the South Bay

There are eight basic rules to keep the ride safe We ride legally and follow all traffic rules There are many volunteers who help to lead and direct the ride itself -- please listen to their helpful instructions! Stay far away from anyone who appears inebriated, and encourage them to go home safely -- they will likely hurt themselves or others and/or get a nasty ticket before the night is out

Volunteers are always needed Come to a meeting, scout rides, deliver fliers, pick up trash, help encourage fellow riders to follow the rules, put your ideas on the wiki, put your photos on the Flickr group, and of course, tell your friends!
For more information, including what to bring, please see the Official Site

Start Time(s): All Day, Every Day - Outdoor Installation

The acclaimed Palo Alto Art Center will present Bay Area artist Judith Selby Lang's LawnBowls, the next new temporary site-specific installation in its series exploring art in public and community spaces Opening February 1, 2012, LawnBowls will be installed on the grounds of the Palo Alto Lawn Bowls Club, 474 Embarcadero in Palo Alto, through February 2013 Lang's work has been celebrated for its striking focus on the relationship between humans and the environment LawnBowls will be created by the public in several community workshops using recycled plastic bags to create monumental ball sculptures For information, visit wwwcityofpaloaltoorg/artcenter

"As a mixed media installation artist I am exploring the personal and global impact of detritus," says Lang "Through my art, I hope to bring awareness to crucial environmental issues and enliven public space Plastic is my primary material because it's free, it's ubiquitous, it's archival As we come to the end of the Era of Oil, plastic seems to be the material most expressive of our times And, like diamonds, it is forever"

LawnBowls will be an installation of 10-12 large balls created from single-use plastic bags arranged on the lawn space adjacent to the Palo Alto Lawn Bowls Club The balls will appear as a game in progress--as if some giant players had just left the scene These colorful sculptures will provide a compelling example of a playful reuse of what might otherwise be trash or perhaps recycled

The creation of LawnBowls will involve a community effort Workshops with the public (including youth, veterans, seniors and others) will be held at several locations in Palo Alto and East Palo Alto Participants will help cut hundreds of bags into strips to form the wrapping and will help to twine the bags around the form Working together, participants will gain pride in crafting something bigger than they could do on their own And they will help to make an important statement about plastic pollution

The awareness of the problem with single-use plastic bags is increasing The City of Palo Alto has been proactive, banning the bags in larger grocery stores in 2009 Efforts to educate the public about this important change continue In a fun and eye-catching way LawnBowls will contribute to this effort

LawnBowls is presented in conjunction with the Palo Alto Lawn Bowls Club, (wwwpalbcorg), is co-sponsored by the Palo Alto Public Art Commission and is supported by the Palo Alto Art Center Foundation Double Take and Clear-Story were funded, in part, by the Palo Alto Art Center Foundation through an IMLS grant

In addition to LawnBowls, Judith Selby Lang will also create a second related site-specific installation in the Palo Alto in the spring of 2012, dates and details to be announced

Sunset's garden is open for free, self-guided tours from 9am to 4pm Mondays through Fridays (except holidays and the week before Celebration Weekend in early June) Sunset's headquarters sits upon land that was originally part of a grant to Don José Arguello, governor of Spanish California in 1815 The early-California-style buildings that house our offices reflect that influence They were designed by Cliff May, father of the California ranch-style home, to bridge indoor and outdoor living spaces The main building opened in 1952
The original Sunset display garden was designed by Thomas Church, the dean of Western landscape architects It included a border that followed the contours of San Francisquito Creek, with distinct areas representing the major climate zones of the West, from the deserts of Arizona and Southern California to the cold, wet areas of the Northwest
Many of these original trees and shrubs still stand, retaining the regional flavor of the border But a major renovation in early spring 2000, under the direction of Chris Jacobson and Beverly Sarjeant of Garden Art, brought a fresh new look to the garden Trees, shrubs, vines, ground covers, perennials, and ornamental grases now show how foliage textures and colors can combine for beautiful effects Flower color comes primarily from blooming shrubs and perennials This is truly a garden for all seasons
