Pageant of the Pacific - The History, Lore and Legend of the World's Greatest Ocean

The vast Pacific is seventy-million-square miles of ocean, a third of the earth’s surface. Hear tales of swashbuckling adventurers and navigators, exploring the black sands of Tahiti and Bora Bora, the gleaming white beaches and towering palms of Hawaii. These explorers found exotic, romantic volcanic islands with welcoming people and haunting legends. From the days of sail and steam to the pioneering experiments in transpacific aviation, meet the great ships, the great captains and the flying Clippers. With new slants on old stories, this is Pacific lore at its very best. Highlights include fabled personalities — Magellan and Drake, Captains Cook, Vancouver, Spreckels, Irwin, William Matson and Juan Trippe. Join historian Michael Svanevik for a lavishly illustrated, provocative and witty three-part series.

Reception and discussion immediately follows each presentation. While this is a single lecture in three parts, each lecture is a self-contained episode. Fee includes same-day admission to Filoli on a self-guided basis.
