Favorite Works in Mixed Media - Exhibition
May 16 - June 28, 2012
On view through June 28 at The Caldwell Gallery is Favorite Works in Mixed Media with work by Joyce Barron Leopardo, Marianne Lettieri and Joyce Savre. The gallery, located at 400 County Government Center, Hall of Justice, in Redwood City, is also home to The Community Gallery located downstairs near the café and The Rotunda Gallery at 555 County Center.
Joyce Barron Leopardo's award-winning watercolor, acrylic and mixed media paintings are vibrant and alive with color. Her large florals and lyrical abstracts celebrating music are shown in this exhibit. "Watercolor is a seductive medium that has been revered by its devoted practitioners for centuries. I fuse the sensual fluid medium with a wonderful awareness that comes from seeing, feeling and touching something and then sharing it with others."
Battered objects and oddball materials are the continuing materials used by Marianne Lettieri when constructing her mixed media assemblages. "The materials that make their way into my art are rich in history and embedded with memories. I use their voices as a form of shorthand for social commentary about who we are and how we have lived." Her unique constructions "quietly protest a world that rushes and clashes so much it often misses the enchantment of everyday life."
Joyce Savre's love of language and poetry inspires her multi-layered watercolor, acrylic and collage artwork. "My love of language, the word and poetry are often symbolized in my work by an indecipherable script. Here the word/art is not meant to be read, but to suggest an homage to language. Recycled images from last paintings, lines of a poem and passages of music reappear in a different setting, a new context." Savre is showing nearly a dozen of her large scale mixed media paintings that demonstrate this love of the written word.
The Community Gallery is proud to present mixed media artwork by Debora Crosby in her solo show Curiosities and Parables in Nature. Crosby used antique publications and digital collage to create her mixed media artwork. "The images playfully interact with the printed text and invite the viewer to create their own narrative about the scene, as well as treasure hunt for the meaning words in the background."
Dave Putnam is the talented Woodside artist exhibiting his unique steel and concrete wildlife sculptures, in addition to a hanging brass and aluminum "Serpent" mobile, in the Rotunda Gallery. Putnam creates unique, widely-collected and large sculpture that raises awareness about endangered animals throughout the world.
