This show focuses on trendy Manhattan art gallery owners Barbara and David Kahn, whose lives are upended when Barbara's Mineola housewife sister, Trudy, deposits their eccentric mother, Sophie, on the couple's doorstep while she and her husband Martin head to Buffalo to rescue their sexually precocious college student daughter from a ménage à trios with two men. Barbara and David introduce Sophie to suave nonagenarian artist...

" Guess who's coming to dinner ? " is a set-up for many theatrical and cinematic plots and subplots - but this one takes the cake. A brilliant, tightly scripted story for a small cast takes place within the same stage set - and there is so much going on it is hard to realize the entire story is in one well-designed room. The dialogue takes us outside the apartment but the complex plot twists can't be revealed in preview. It is unusually sensitive and celebrates the struggle and comedy of family life across generations . It gives a chance for the toast of the " sandwich generation " to be buttered. Very talented cast. It's a modern family sit-com that moves into relational depths that modern tv cannot offer. It has the great blend of love, hope and comedy . It reminds us that we don't need slapstick, explosives, insults or special effects to offer an engaging and profound show. Collapse
