In Shady Shakespeare's production of Moliere's last play, baroque meets glam rock. Argan, an aging rocker, has everything -- wealth, two lovely daughters, a beautiful second wife ... and a bevy of imagined illnesses. Engaging several doctors to prescribe medications and treatments for his supposed afflictions, Argan resents the mounting cost of his therapy, constantly looking for a way to save money.

He lands on a scheme to marry his oldest daughter to a medical student in a plan to obtain free doctor's care. Unfortunately, his daughter, Angelique, is already in love with the handsome Cleante. Meanwhile, Argan's second wife, Beline, resentful of his daughters, is looking for a way to cut them out of the will clearing her own path to her husband's fortune.

Add into the mix a contingent of money-grubbing doctors and a clever maid, and you have the makings of one of the finest comedies of the 17th century.

We saw the show last night and had a really good time. While the show started a little slow, it picked up speed and was a very enjoyable evening at the theatre. The set and costumes are amazing; both elements bring Moliere's work to life. Coupled with some talented, passionate performances and you have a very engaging show. Shady Shakespeare has done an excellent job with an original translation of the work set in 70's Glam Rock nirvana. You have one more chance to rock out with Shady Shakespeare, so don't be a square and make your way to the Historic Hoover Theatre tonight! Collapse

To go into too much detail would ruin the surprise of it all. The cast was magnificent, the new translation and alternate take on the source was truly inspired, the costuming, the sound, it all came together in a singularity of theatrical genius. Now, that admittedly sounds trite, obnoxious, and just plain stupid. But it's all accurate. My only wish is that the theatre had sold more seats so it could be enjoyed by more people. Honestly the best thing I've seen outside of Broadway. Collapse
