  Ballet San Jose’s Artistic Director Dennis Nahat has a knack for clarifying a familiar classic; he also takes liberties, interjecting music where he wants to explain something or build momentum. Mostly it works, even though you squint your eyes with surprise. So it was with Nahat’s revival of Swan Lake with David Guthrie’s sets and costumes, first performed in Cleveland in 1987....   Okay, I'm not entirely objective. I work for Ballet San Jose, but I really do love this piece. It was the first ballet I saw at Ballet SJ...long before I took a job there. The sets and costumes are gorgeous, the Tchaikovsky score is great, the story is so good, and Dennis Nahat has really expanded and clarified the character of the villain, Baron Von Rothbart. We have 3 really wonderful dancers doing the Odette/Odile (White Swan/Black Swan) roles. Karen Gabay dancing with Maykel Solas as Prince Siegfried, Maria Jacobs-Yu with Romon Moreno, and Alexsandra Meijer performing with guest artist Carlos Acosta of the Royal Ballet, London. Last time we did this show, my wife and I saw all three women perform and we may just have to do that again. They are all excellent and each one brings something fresh to the stage. And we HAVE to see Acosta. This is a very rare chance to see one of the top male dancers in the world right here in San Jose. Anyway...just come. You will not regret it. Collapse
