Embers of War is a powerful eighty-minute adaptation of Homer’s great poem of war and self-discovery. In this version of the Iliad (translated by Rush Rehm), we meet the great heroes of the Trojan War — Achilles, Agamemnon, Hector, Paris, Ajax, Patroclus. Embers of War is a powerful eighty-minute adaptation of Homer’s great poem of war and self-discovery. In this version of the Iliad (translated by Rush Rehm), we meet the great heroes of the Trojan War — Achilles, Agamemnon, Hector, Paris, Ajax, Patroclus. But we also encounter the women of Troy — Hecuba, Andromache, Helen — and the immortal gods who stand above the conflict but find themselves inextricably caught up in it. Embers of War brings to the stage the great epic themes of power, wrath, and violent destruction, but it also provides unforgettable moments of intimacy, affection, and the wisdom that comes only through defeat and heartrending loss.

Stanford Classics Professor Marsh McCall will lead a discussion after the staged reading.
