Lucas Hnath's drama "The Christians" focuses on Pastor Paul, the founding pastor of a mega-church who's suddenly hit with a crisis of faith. He feels compelled to lead his thousands-strong flock in a new and unexpected direction on its 20th anniversary -- one that directly conflicts with the former tenets of his ministry. When his motives are questioned, both his professional and personal relationships are put to the test. Backed by a live choir, "The Christians" is both epic and unexpectedly intimate. This provocative play now comes to San Francisco Playhouse, offering an unflinching look at faith -- of any denomination -- and its power to unite or divide. [less-]

In the critically acclaimed, award-winning "John", from Pulitzer Prize winner Annie Baker ("The Flick, Circle Mirror Transformation"), a young New York couple arrives in Gettysburg to see the famous Civil War sites and ends up battling to keep their relationship alive. Welcomed by the cheerfully odd proprietor of a tchotchke-filled bed-and-breakfast, the duo encounters a number of eerie occurrences, as questions of secrets and spirituality, love and solitude, and life and death enter the atmosphere. This off-Broadway success (of which "The New Yorker" raved: "Annie Baker's "John " is so good on so many levels that it casts a unique and brilliant light") now comes to San Francisco's American Conservatory Theater's Strand Theater. For a play that famously starts arguments about sexual harassment, political correctness and the irreconcilable differences between men and women, one thing is indisputable about David Mamet's "Oleanna": It's a drama of the highest order. "TIME" magazine named it one of its "Ten Best Plays," and Roger Ebert called "Oleanna" "one of the most stimulating experiences I've had in a theater." In this charged two-character drama, a professor and his female student become embroiled in a war of words. Things take a dangerous turn when perceptions differ, and she later accuses him of sexual exploitation. As the serene campus transforms into an explosive battleground, Mamet -- the Pulitzer-winning writer of "Glengarry Glen Ross" -- begs you to question what it means to be right or wrong. See which side of the debate you fall on when the Northside Theatre Company presents "Oleanna" at San Jose's Olinder Theatre. [less-]

Inspired by the erotic Hebrew text "Song of Songs", this lush and mysterious musical play follows one woman's journey through a fervent love affair that threatens to destroy her life. "Love Sick" is an intensely compelling tale of passion and madness that bounces back and forth between ancient Jerusalem and modern-day Tel Aviv, fueled by a tour-de-force performance by luminous Israeli actress Ofra Daniel. Directed by Broadway veteran Christopher Renshaw and featuring live instrumentation on the Qanun, a 14th-century instrument that only a few dozen people on the planet play, "Love Sick" is a theatrical experience like no other at Mountain View Center for the Performing Arts. Nasal-voiced comic Gilbert Gottfried made his name in the '80s with a season on "Saturday Night Live" and crazy promos for the then-new MTV. His big film break came with "Beverly Hills Cop II", where his improvised scene as business manager Sidney Bernstein stole the show. Gottfried's appeared in dozens of movies since and, in recent years, has become one of the nation's top voice-over talents. He played the wise-cracking parrot Iago in Disney's "Aladdin" and for more than a decade was the voice of the Aflac duck. His raunchier humor can be seen in the film "The Aristocrats", in his appearances on "The Howard Stern Show" and in his book "Rubber Balls and Liquor". Despite his widespread success, Gottfried has never given up stand-up comedy. Catch one of his sets -- famously politically incorrect, featuring a full-frontal assault of no-holds-barred jokes -- at San Jose Improv. [less-]

Erykah Badu calls him the "king of neo-soul," as does the "Village Voice", but long before he became famed for combining jazz and R&B, Roy Ayers was a five-year-old kid who got his start when Lionel Hampton handed him a pair of vibe mallets at a concert. By age 21, he was a post-bop jazz vibraphonist and singer, releasing albums on Atlantic before adding funk to his sound in the '70s. He had hits as a popular R&B bandleader with "Everybody Loves the Sunshine," "Searchin'" and "Don't Stop the Feeling," laying down grooves that're heavily sampled and remixed by hip hop artists and DJs today. Ayers continues to tour the world and collaborate with artists like Talib Kweli and others well into his fourth decade in the music industry. In this production at the Lucie Stern Theatre in Palo Alto, the West Bay Opera presents an evening of three one-act operas collectively known as "Il trittico" by Giacomo Puccini. The trifecta of "Il tabarro, Suor Angelica" and "Gianni Schicchi" originally premiered at the Metropolitan Opera in 1918. In "Il tabarro", up-and-coming soprano Toni Marie Palmertree plays Giorgetta, a sailor's wife who is having a passionate affair with a longshoreman, played by Mexican tenor Alonso Sicairos. The versatile Palmertree takes the title role in "Suor Angelica" as well, a story of religious redemption set at an Italian convent. "Il trittico" concludes with "Gianni Schicchi", a wicked comedy about greedy relatives scheming to steal an inheritance from a dead family member. [less-]
